17 Though the fig tree may not blossom, Nor fruit be on the vines; Though the labor of the olive may fail, And the fields yield no food; Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, And there be no herd in the stalls— 18 Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. 19 The Lord God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer’s feet, And He will make me walk on my high hills.
Habakkuk 3:17-19
Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings. Genesis 3:7
All of the things in this verse can be taken at face value. I think God is so deep and all or multi-dimensional, though, and often the things we see at face value mean more, too. These questions are to prompt us to simply think a little more and ask Holy Spirit to take us deeper into understanding. Deep calls to deep.1. When I think of fig trees, I think of a covering- self made. I feel like Habakkuk realizes God sees. There is no hiding from Him now, sin and all is exposed and they need God's redemption and covering, just like Adam and Eve did when they tried to cover themselves with fig leaves. 2. This makes me think of our works, our fruit. \”I am the vine and you are the branches.\” No man can produces fruit without God. If there isn't fruit being produced then maybe there is a disconnect with God and once again a need to be redeemed and reconnected. 3. One of the many things olive oil was used for during this time period was light- lamps. If the crop failed things might be extra dark. I think this is significant as it felt like a dark time to Habakkuk. Jesus is the Light and our redemption and I think Habakkuk knew their need for Jesus to come into the world. He definitely knew they were helpless without God!
